Cutting-Edge Formwork Solutions in Action
The Kingston Dock project in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, aims to enhance local infrastructure and support commercial and recreational activities, stimulating economic growth and creating a safer, more efficient maritime environment. A key part of this initiative is the improvement of the Kingston and Marysville Wolfe Island ferry docks, accommodating a larger ferry and enhancing services with new buildings for passengers, utilities, and services. Clearwater Structures, a heavy civil construction company is improving mooring and docking facilities, expanding marshaling spaces, and building better amenities for pedestrians and cyclists.
Choosing Innovative Solutions and Engineering Excellence
Clearwater Structures selected EFCO for this undertaking, which includes two primary structures: the finger pier and the dolphin. The finger pier consists of 21 lower caissons arranged in a 7′ x 3′ (33m x 10.3 m) layout, linked by concrete beams and precast slabs. The dolphin structure will incorporate eight taller caissons with pre-fitted supports and steel X bracing for improved lateral stability. EFCO’s PLATE GIRDER®, E-BEAM & SUPER STUD® were vital in achieving the project’s structural and performance objectives.
Efficient Formwork Construction Process
EFCO’s PLATE GIRDER main beams and E-BEAM & SUPER STUD soffits were used for their exceptional performance in creating long spans with minimal supports, reducing the need for extensive scaffolding. The ability to span 5.2 m (17′) in one direction allowed for pre-building on land and then flying the components into place, significantly streamlining the construction process and providing cost-effective alternatives to purchasing steel beams. This solution enhanced safety, reduced assembly time, and offered significant cost savings compared to a custom-built steel alternative. This cost efficiency was a decisive factor in Clearwater’s selection of EFCO’s solution. The ganged assemblies were lifted into position using a crane onshore or on a nearby barge, with workers guiding and securing them. Divers handled underwater tasks while surface workers completed final adjustments and connections, ensuring a smooth installation.
Addressing Unique Challenges
The Kingston Dock project faced several unique challenges, including incomplete adjacent structures complicating access and a busy project environment requiring careful coordination with other trades. EFCO’s design capabilities, which allow for longer-spanning members to be installed in fewer picks, enabled Clearwater Structures to complete the installation faster than anticipated. Despite winter conditions and underwater work, EFCO’s formwork systems performed efficiently, and their flexibility helped navigate conflicts with the lower steel structure, tying the caissons together.
Why Clearwater Structure Choose EFCO
Clearwater Structures selected EFCO for the Kingston Dock project due to EFCO’s innovative formwork solutions and engineering excellence. EFCO’s ability to overcome challenges and increase project efficiency was crucial in enhancing the Kingston and Marysville Wolfe Island ferry docks. This collaboration improved local infrastructure, fostering economic growth and enhancing maritime operations. Clearwater Structures highly values EFCO’s knowledge and super service and looks forward to using EFCO’s quality products in the future.
