Triumphs & Challenges for LurÍn Bridge Reconstruction
The Lurín Bridge accommodates over 30,000 vehicles daily, connecting the city center to the beach towns in southern Lima. 3F Constructora E.I.R.L was awarded the contract for reconstructing the bridge to facilitate the increased traffic flow. The initial design used precast beams, but due to an unforeseen issue on-site, the original beams were not able to be used. A new design was developed with only 25 days remaining before traffic resumed on the bridge.
EFCO Provides Quick Solution
3F Constructora partnered with EFCO, using the lightweight E-Z DECK® system and SUPER STUD® towers to support and stabilize the jobsite-built beam formwork. The work platform had to accommodate varying grade changes ranging from 1500 mm to 4780 mm (5′ to 15′-8 1/4″) and span over the Rio Lurín. With a secure work platform, 3F Constructora could secure the beams to prevent any overturning while installing the slab formwork.
Bridge Slab Support Ensures Stability
Z-BEAMS,® E-BEAMS,® and Strong Arm Hangers were used to support the concrete slab efficiently. Utilizing the strength of E-BEAMS, EFCO engineers were able to design the support of the 200 mm (8″) thick slab with E-BEAMS at 500 mm (20″) centers, reducing material and labor. Hanging Z-BEAM and E-BEAM work decks allowed the cast-in-place diaphragms to be placed with the bridge deck formwork.
