A Strategic Parking Solution
Near the University of Colorado, a multi-level cast-in-place concrete parking garage was constructed to support the growing demand for parking on campus. The garage was built with a focus on making it safe, accessible, and efficient while also considering sustainability and space optimization. It was built on a sloping hillside with limited space, so creative solutions were required to make the most of the available area. Hensel Phelps, a leader in construction for the Boulder area, was selected as the contractor to take on this challenging project.

Building on a history of successful collaborations, Hensel Phelps once again chose EFCO to fulfill the formwork requirements for this parking garage project. Having previously worked with EFCO’s innovative and high-quality products, Hensel Phelps trusted EFCO’s expertise to manage complex structures, including grade beams, foundation walls (both one-sided and standard), shear walls, as well as elevator and stair cores.

Innovative Solutions on Tough Terrain: EFCO’s Impact on Cost and Quality
EFCO’s consultants worked closely with Hensel Phelps to address the challenges of a sloped site, limited access, and narrow space between the property line and retaining wall by developing customized formwork solutions that could be secured on the wall and stay out of the way. EFCO’s durable steel forms reduced material usage and accelerated cycle times, with the adaptable EFCO-LITE® system efficiently handling the sloping landscape and the PLATE GIRDER® system providing high-quality wall finishes that minimized post-pour treatments. By choosing EFCO’s reusable steel forms over traditional wood, Hensel Phelps lowered costs and environmental impact, achieving the lowest in-place concrete costs. The EFCO engineering team designed complex form gangs incorporating PLATE GIRDER, stripping corners, jump brackets, and flipper decks for the cores, optimizing crane-lifted assemblies to boost productivity.
EFCO’s Support Drives Safe and Efficient Formwork Setup
EFCO’s engineering and field service teams collaborated closely with Hensel Phelps to ensure a safe and efficient formwork setup despite limited access and uneven terrain, preventing costly delays. EFCO guided the crew in implementing an optimized gang-formwork approach for shear walls and developed a detailed cycle plan that minimized the equipment on site. By streamlining cycles and assembly, EFCO reduced both material and labor costs, enabling Hensel Phelps to achieve the project’s Lowest In-Place Concrete Cost (LIPCC).
