A Bridge to the Future: Discover the Bauang Bypass Project

Bauang, San Fernando, La Union, Philippines

Connecting Communities: The Impact of the Bauang Bypass Bridge

The Bauang Bypass Bridge is a key component of the Bauang-San Fernando-San Juan Bypass Road Project, a flagship infrastructure initiative in the Philippines’ Region 1. Spanning 3,940’ (895.9 m), this bridge forms part of 13.8 miles (22.19 km), four-lane road connecting Barangay Payocpoc, Bauang, and Barangay Taboc, San Juan. Scheduled for completion in 2025, the bridge will cut travel time between these locations from one hour to just 30 minutes. MG Lualhati Construction serves as the project’s contractor.

EFCO’s Tailored Formwork Solutions Meet the Challenges of Riverbed Construction

MG Lualhati Construction Corporation chose EFCO for its innovative solutions and proactive approach to problem-solving, addressing the complex challenges of building the Bauang Bypass Bridge. EFCO’s self-spanning PLATE GIRDER® system played a crucial role in spanning the river between Pier 7 and Pier 8. Using just two HDS-100 towers, it eliminated the need for extensive ground shoring, saving materials, labor, and time while maintaining structural integrity. Working closely with EFCO, MG Lualhati prioritized safety, efficiency, and quality, streamlining construction to achieve cost-effective, high-performance results.

EFCO’s Self-Spanning Design Cuts Costs and Enhances Project Efficiency

EFCO’s innovative approach brought MG Lualhati Construction Corporation significant time and cost savings. The PLATE GIRDER system, supported by just two HDS-100 towers, eliminated the need for extensive ground shoring, reducing resources and time. This self-spanning design reduced reliance on heavy I-beams, to provide the Lowest In-Place Concrete Cost (LIPCC). The HDS-100 shoring system, with a leg load capacity of 100,000 lb (445 kN), provided reliable support against high tides, allowing work to stay on schedule.

EFCO’s E-Z DECK system, with a leg load capacity up to 28,000 lb (125 kN), was used for the bridge’s overland portion, and the self-spanning PLATE GIRDERS provided structural support for the more complex river sections. By using EFCO’s shoring systems and custom methodologies, MG Lualhati Construction Corporation was able to advance efficiently from Pier 8 to Pier 11 and tackle the challenges of spanning the river from Pier 7 to Pier 8.

EFCO’s Service and Quantitative Impact

EFCO’s dedication to Quality and Super Service was evident at every stage of the project. Using the
PLATE GIRDER system with only two towers to span the bridge minimized the construction footprint, eliminating the need for additional base slabs. This streamlined approach reduced materials and labor, helping achieve the Lowest In-Place Concrete Cost.

Tackling site challenges like unstable ground and high tide fluctuations required precise engineering. EFCO’s team worked closely with MG Lualhati Construction to ensure every phase prioritized safety and efficiency. The careful lifting, stripping, and launching of the 61.7-ton (56-mt) PLATE GIRDERS in the river section highlighted EFCO’s commitment to operational excellence.

Why MG Lualhati Construction Corporation Chose EFCO

MG Lualhati chose EFCO for its expertise, proactive approach, and proven commitment to Quality, Innovation, Integrity, and Super Service. The self-spanning PLATE GIRDER solution and EFCO’s overall approach helped meet the project’s structural and budgetary goals, reinforcing EFCO’s reputation as a reliable partner in achieving the Lowest In-Place Concrete Cost.
